찬란한 탄식 / The Glorious Lament, 2025, HD video, colour, 5.1 surround sound, 14 minutes 15 seconds
In the scorching summer of southern France, I encountered a cherry tree. The tree’s fallen trunk lay scattered and decaying, harbouring mould, insects, moisture, sunlight, soil, and my breath. It was a trace of a life that had ended — and a subtle sign of one not yet finished.
The Glorious Lament follows the tree’s decomposing body and senses a continuity of life. It responds to the silence of death and captures the rhythms that emerge in its wake. This death is not an end, but the beginning of solidarity; lament becomes a sensory act that sustains the persistence of being — beyond grief.
Special thanks to the late cherry tree in Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres (France), the living beings that shared life with the tree and the painter Perez Michel.
